AI/Deepfake
A 45-second video claiming to show Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu saying his country and India will act against Iran and its “ally” Pakistan after the former threatened to annihilate Israel.
The archived version of the post can be seen here. We have received this video on our Whatsapp tipline (91-9999499044), too, with users requesting us to fact-check it.
Newschecker noticed that the lip movements of Netanyahu were not completely in synchronisation with his speech and they also seemed unnatural, indicating that the video may be AI-manipulated. Also, we did not come across any news reports or video statements of Netanyahu pledging that Israel and India will together confront Iran and Pakistan, further raising our doubts.
A further search led us to this 01:20-minute statement by Netanyahu, uploaded on the IsraeliPM Youtube channel on June 22, 2025, where he praises US president Donald Trump’s decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, emphasising peace through strength for regional prosperity. Similar news reports on Netanyahu’s statement on June 22, 2025 can be seen here and here.
A comparison of screengrabs from the viral video (right) with the statement (left), along with Netanyahu’s attire and the background, further suggest that it is the same clip that has been digitally altered. At no point in the statement did the Israeli PM mention India, Pakistan or China. We ran the audio past the Resemble Deepfake Detector, which found it “Fake.”
We then ran the video past Hive Moderation, an AI-content detection tool, which said the video is “84.7% likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.”
Newschecker ran the video past Deepfake-o-Meter, where five of its 10 classifiers leaned towards the video being AI-generated, including one giving a score of 99.9%. The other five classifiers gave the video a low likelihood of being a deepfake.
Last month, the Israel-Iran war began when the Israeli military reportedly launched “Operation Rising Lion” on June 13, 2022, and attacked Iran’s nuclear and military sites, top generals and nuclear scientists after it had concluded that Tehran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. The US then joined the Israeli campaign and attacked three Iranian nuclear sites, following which Iran responded with missile strikes against Israel and an attack on an airbase housing US soldiers in Qatar. Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, brokered by the US, on June 24, 2025.
