Photo shows the recent Bangladesh Air Force jet crash in Dhaka.
Photo found to be AI generated.
At least 27 people were killed and several others injured after a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI jet, an aircraft manufactured by China, rammed into a school building in Dhaka due to a “mechanical failure” shortly after the take off on Monday (July 21).
Shortly after the crash, a photo went viral on social media showing smoke billowing from an aircraft grounded within a building’s premises, surrounded by onlookers. Many users linked the image to the recent tragedy in Bangladesh. However, Newschecker’s investigation revealed that the photo was AI-generated.

We began our investigation by examining the viral photograph, and noticed that the aircraft appeared to be largely intact despite a collision with the building, contradicting the images of the mishap shared by credible news outlets.
Further, several human figures seen in the viral image appeared to merge with each other or were unnaturally deformed. The smooth texture of the photo also suggested that it may have been created using artificial intelligence (AI).

We then checked the viral image on multiple AI detection platforms which confirmed that the media was AI generated. Sightengine, for instance, found a 82% probability of the viral image, allegedly showing the Bangladesh Air Force that crashed in Dhaka, to be AI generated.
Another AI content detection platform Hive Moderation also found a 98.6% likelihood of the viral photo containing AI generated or deepfake content. Similarly, the WasItAI website analysed the alleged image from the recent air force jet crash in Bangladesh, and concluded, “We are quite confident that this image, or significant part of it, was created by AI.”
