Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Viral ‘Last’ Photo Of Ex-Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Is From 2021, Not Onboard Ill-Fated Air India Flight

Last photo of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed on the London-bound Air India flight that crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The archived version of the post can be seen here, which has clocked 27.4K views so far. The photo was also shared by leading journalist Deepak Chaurasia and media outlets ABP Live and ABP Ananda, along with former TSREDCO chairman Y Sathish Reddy

Newschecker observed that the co-passengers aboard the plane in the viral photo wore masks, while all of them were seated far apart, indicating social distancing and that the photo may have been taken during the Covid pandemic when there were travel restrictions in place through 2020, 2021 and even 2022.

We noticed that a user, Majid Ladhani, who is a BJP leader from Daman, had replied to one of the posts sharing the photo, stating it was taken in 2021, while attaching a screenshot of a Facebook post by a user, Goswami Lina. Lina’s post, which seemed to be in response to the initial reports speculating whether Rupani was aboard the London-bound flight, stated that the photo was from 2021.

However, when Newschecker looked up Lina’s Facebook account, we found her profile locked, following which, we contacted BJP leader Majid Ladhani. Ladhani told Newschecker that Lina Goswami is his friend, who lives in Ahmedabad, and confirmed that the viral photo is from October 2021, when she was on a trip to London. The BJP leader stated that she had shared the photo then too. Ladhani also told us that Lina Goswami had removed the picture posted on Facebook yesterday (June 12) after it went viral, while adding that she had written June 12, 2021 in the post by mistake.
