The claim is false. The video is actually from a protest by the Moran community in Tinsukia, Assam, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
A video of a large gathering of people holding torches is currently going viral on social media. An X user posted the video, stating, “A sea of citizens in Assam took out a march against Bangladeshis. All are seen chanting in support of the mass eviction drive run by Assam Govt”.
An archived link of the claim can be seen here, which has gone viral after the eviction drives stirred controversy with the Opposition reportedly saying the exercises target the Bengali-speaking Muslim community and are a tool to consolidate votes for the BJP, along with being a ploy to hand over lands to industrialists.
The viral claim is false. The video does not show citizens of Assam protesting against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Instead, it captures the Moran community’s rally in Tinsukia demanding ST status.
