BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari Says Party Facing Extinction In West Bengal? No, Viral Video Is Clipped

Claim
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticises the party during a public address, says it is facing extinction in West Bengal.
Fact
Viral claim is false; video was found to be clipped and shared out of context.
A 28-second video, where West Bengal’s leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari purportedly says that his party, BJP, will not remain in the state if it does not change its attitude, has gone viral across social media platforms.
“WB Leader of Opposition warns that @BJP4Bengal will face extinction if it doesn’t change course – ‘BJP is pushing everyone back by branding them Bangladeshi. Very uncharacteristic of Suvendu Adhikari. Why this sudden change of heart?” read a post by Nilanjan Das, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) state general secretary, IT and social media wing, sharing the video where Adhikari is addressing a public rally. The post has clocked 97.2K views so far.
Fact Check
Newschecker ran a reverse image search of keyframes, which led us to the full version of the public address, streamed live on Adhikari’s Facebook page on August 17, 2025. The same video was also shared on the official X account of the BJP’s West Bengal unit, where we learnt that the senior party leader was addressing a rally against “language terrorism” in Kolkata’s Taratala.

The viral excerpt can be seen from the 13:48 mark. The senior BJP leader, who was speaking about alleged corruption and women’s safety issues under the Mamata Banerjee-led government in the state, was quoting AITC’s statements against the BJP while defending the party’s position against “illegal infiltrators.”
“What did they say here? They said, we will remove the BJP entirely. BJP will not remain here. Leave this attitude, this BJP attitude. Come to the streets, what is the BJP doing? BJP is driving everyone out, calling everyone Bangladeshi. Oh no, listen clearly. On August 15, Independence Day, our Prime Minister said from the Red Fort that no country in the world has infiltrators, and our country will not have infiltrators. What are you scared of?” Adhikari said in Hindi, adding, “I am saying crystal clearly, those who are Indian Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, or Buddhist are not included in this. During the Summary Intensive Revision of the voter list, Indians have nothing to worry about. Not only Indians, even those who came from Bangladesh to West Bengal as Hindus to protect their religion are not considered infiltrators. They are our friends, relatives, and refugees.”
Asianet News Bangla, too, live-streamed the rally on August 17, 2025, further confirming that the viral claim was false.
