Fact Check
Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi admitted that six jets were lost, and 250 soldiers were martyred in the recent conflict with Pakistan.
No such statement by the COAS, video found to be manipulated by using AI tools.
A video claiming to show Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi confirming that six Indian jets were lost, and 250 soldiers were martyred in the May 2025 military confrontation with Pakistan has gone viral online.
In the video, General Dwivedi is purportedly heard saying “…the next war which we are looking at, it may happen soon and we have to prepare accordingly…This non-kinetic has to be fought together. We have already lost six jets and 250 soldiers but we will never give up. We will learn. We have some deductions. So what are the deductions?…”
Newschecker fact checked the video and found it to be manipulated.
Multiple Pakistan-based X handles, including verified profiles, shared the viral with the caption, “Indian Army Chief admits losing 6 jets and 250 soldiers in war against Pakistan, says preparing for the next war against Pakistan soon.”

A keyword search for “Army Chief” and “six jets lost” on Google did not yield any credible report/ official release carrying the alleged statement by General Upendra Dwivedi.
We then looked up the keyframes of the viral clip on Google Lens which directed us to a post on the official YouTube channel of the Indian Army, dated August 9, 2025. It features the Army Chief’s address at IIT Madras, showing him in the same setting background as in the viral footage.
Around 11 minutes into the video, we heard the COAS saying, “…the non-kinetic quadrant is something which you can start today and the next war which we are looking at, it may happen soon and we have to prepare accordingly, as already brought out by director that in this we have to fight this battle together. This non-kinetic has to be fought together. So what are the deductions. That as far as whole of nation approach will be there for the next war it is not the military alone which will be fighting…”
The segment did not mention anything about the alleged loss to India during conflict with Pakistan, contradicting the viral video.
An excerpt from his speech was shared by ANI News, whose watermark is the viral clip, on YouTube on August 11, 2025, stating, “During an address at IIT Madras, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi in a cryptic message hinted that India is preparing for ‘next war’ and it may ‘happen soon’.”
At the 1:28 minute mark, we heard the Army Chief making the above mentioned remarks. This clip too, did not contain any information about the alleged loss of men and machinery during recent clashes with Pakistan, confirming that a fake audio has been interested into the COAS’ speech to propagate a false narrative.
On carefully analysing the viral clip, we observed a change in audio between 18-24 seconds in the clip, coinciding with the alleged remark. General Dwivedi’s jaw movement appeared unnatural too, hinting towards AI manipulation.
We then looked up the section on AI detection website Hive Moderation which concluded an overall 99.9% likelihood of the media containing AI generated or deepfake content.
Another AI content detection tool Deepware also found “deepfake” in the viral clip.
Newschecker also ran past the audio on Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector, which found it to be “likely deepfake.”
The fact checking unit of government’s PIB also flagged the viral clip, alleging to show General Dwivedi admitting that India lost 6 jets and 250 soldiers in the war against Pakistan, as “AI generated/deepfake,” and asserted that the COAS has not made any such statement.
Hence, the viral video, allegedly showing the Indian Army Chief admitting to the loss of jets and personnel during conflict with Pakistan, was found to be altered.
