Fact Check: Hindu Woman Raped & Stuffed Into a Freezer by Muslim Partner in Assam?

A disturbing photograph showing a naked corpse inside a freezer has surfaced on social media platforms, with users linking it to an alleged rape and murder case involving an interfaith couple in Assam. It is being claimed that one Muhammad Sabir Miyan, along with his friends, gangraped his Hindu live-in partner Kajal, and froze her to death.

The post is being widely circulated online with users urging others to share it with “every Hindu girl.” Newschecker, however, found the claim to be untrue.

Fact Check/Verification

We began our investigation by conducting a keyword search using the terms “Kajal,” “Assam” and “freezer” on Google but did not find any recent reports on the alleged incident, raising our suspicion.

Following this, we looked up the viral image on TinEye  which yielded an article by website ‘Documenting Reality,’ dated  February 8, 2010. It featured the viral photo, and stated that a man in Brazil’s Greater São Paulo was arrested for murdering his wife, and keeping her body in a freezer.

A blog titled ‘Noticias de Itabuna’ also featured the same viral image in a post from March 2010 linking it to the above mentioned incident in Brazil.

Assam Police Debunked ‘Fake’ Post: Old Claim Revived

The viral claim about “Kajol from Assam being frozen to death” initially surfaced in 2022 after the brutal murder of  Shraddha Walkar by her live-in partner Aaftab Ameen Poonawala in Delhi.

The Assam Police called out the misinformation in an X post dated December 8, 2022, and clarified that the image was being shared in a false context. They also warned “appropriate action” against people sharing the false claim.

Conclusion

Hence, we find that the viral posts, alleging that a Hindu girl was gangraped and frozen to death by her live-in partner and his friends, are false.
