Fact Check
A purported billboard ad by Amul, mocking US president Donald Trump over his decision to double tariffs on India’s exports to 50%, saying, “Now, ‘Made in India’ is a luxury brand in the US.”
The archived version of the post can be seen here.
Newschecker ran a keyword search for “Amul ad tariff hike”, which did not lead us to any credible reports about such a hoarding by the Indian dairy giant, known for its witty advertisements commenting on news events.
We then looked up Amul’s official Instagram account and saw that on April 4, 2025, the company carried a cartoon on Trump’s controversial tariff chart, a couple of days after the US president had announced so-called reciprocal tariffs on imports from about 90 nations. An April 8, 2025 Getty Images post on a hoarding displaying the cartoon in Mumbai can be seen here, while Amul’s official website, too, has the same cartoon in its “Amul Hits Of 2025” section.
The viral advertisement, however, did not feature in any of the social media pages or website of the dairy brand.
Newschecker noticed the difference in font sizes and styles in the viral advertisement, indicating that it was digitally altered. We then ran the image past Fake Image Detector, which flagged the image as “computer-generated or modified”.
