Fact Check
Video shows Hafiz Saeed, chief of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and accused in 26/11 Mumbai attack, addressing the press after the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
The post can be seen here.
A keyword search for “Hafiz Saeed”, “India”, “Pakistan” and “ceasefire” on Google did not yield any recent reports carrying such remarks by him. Notably, Saeed has been designated as a terrorist by the UN.
We then looked up the keyframes of the viral clip on Google Lens which led us to a YouTube video by AP Archive – the watermark of AP can be seen on the top right corner in the viral clip – aired on February 5, 2017.
It featured the now viral footage of Saeed, stating, “Hafiz Saeed, whose Jamaat-ud-Dawa is a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks, was placed under house arrest along with four aides. Azam Suleman, the top security official in the eastern Punjab province, ordered the five to be detained for 90 days after the government vowed to act against the charity and an affiliate known as the Falah Insaniat Foundation…”
A report by Al Jazeera, dated January 31, 2017, corroborated that Pakistani police have placed Hafiz Saeed under house arrest in Lahore, adding that Saeed was taken into custody at the headquarters for Jamaat-ud-Dawa.
Multiple outlets such as this and this reported on the same.
Hence, we find that an old video of Hafiz Saeed addressing the media has been falsely linked to the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
