Fact Check
A day before his shock resignation, former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar sharply responded to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s statement in the Rajya Sabha that he was afraid of the government. “This part of the assertion will be deleted. Why? Because India’s farmers and their sons are not afraid of anyone under any circumstances,” Dhankhar purportedly said.

Newschecker noticed the word “Budget Session” and the date “04/04/2025” in the viral video, which contradicted the claim that the viral statement happened a day before Dhankhar’s resignation on the first day of the monsoon session of the Parliament on July 21. The ongoing monsoon session is scheduled to conclude on August 21, 2025, while the budget session was held between January 31, 2025 and April 4, 2025.
Taking a cue, we ran a relevant keyword search that led us to this NDTV India post on X, dated April 4, 2025, sharing the viral video. We also came across this NDTV report, dated April 4, 2025, stating that Rajya Sabha LoP and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had requested the then Rajya Sabha chairman, Dhankhar, for a discussion on Manipur to be held in the House, which was when the viral exchange happened.
A further search led us to a 11:54:59 video of the Rajya Sabha proceedings that were streamed live by News18 on April 3, 2025, which included voting on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The viral excerpt can be seen from 05:18:00, further confirming that the claim that the viral exchange happened a day before Dhankhar’s resignation was false.
Newschecker had earlier debunked a viral video claiming to show former Dhankhar’s last public address, where he purportedly questioned the Centre’s stance on farmers’ grievances, finding it to be an old speech shared out of context.
