CCTV footage from a store, showing the moment an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday.
The archived version of the post can be seen here, which has clocked 611.4K views so far.
Evacuations are reportedly underway in Japan, Hawaii and some parts of the US West Coast as the powerful earthquake, which has injured many, damaged buildings and caused widespread flooding in the remote Russian region, triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean. Tsunami alerts of varying levels have also been issued in parts of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Peru and the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador. Kamchatka and Russia’s Far East sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active region that is prone to major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, even as experts deemed it the strongest quake to hit the region since 1952.
Newschecker ran a reverse image search of keyframes, which led us to the same video posted on X and Facebook on March 29, 2025, stating that it showed the impact of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, well before the July 30 earthquake in Russia.
A further search led us to this Times Now post on Instagram on March 31, 2025, sharing the same video.
“CCTV footage from an electronics store in Myanmar captures the terrifying moment when the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on March 28, a powerful tremor that devastated both Myanmar and Thailand…,” read the post. A similar Daily Mail post on Instagram on March 31, too, can be seen here, further confirming that the viral video is not from Russia.
On March 28, 2025, a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which resulted in intense shaking that devastated the region and was felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand and south-west China, killing at least 3,000 people.
UPDATE ON 31/07/2025: Newschecker learnt that the store in the video is the Top One mobile phone store in Myanmar’s Tada-U. The TikTok account of Top One Mobile on April 1, 2025 uploaded a video combining footage of the earthquake’s impact as captured by all its CCTV cameras inside the store with a caption that read, “This is our TopOne Mobile showroom in Tada-U city. Our shop is safe, but we are very sad for the main area of our city”.
