A recent video shows Nitish Kumar questioning the BJP over their role in the Indian freedom movement.
The video is from 2022, and is being shared out of context.
A video allegedly showing Bihar CM Nitish Kumar questioning the BJP and the RSS over their contribution in the Indian freedom struggle has gone viral on social media platforms, just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Sangh in his Independence Day address.
In the 27-second clip, Kumar, whose party is currently allied with the BJP-led NDA, is purportedly heard saying, “How are they linked to Independence? In the 75th year (of Independence), they were saying ‘will do this, and will do that.’ Where were you during the Independence struggle? Who fought the battle for Independence?…”
The video, with a text overlay stating “Why Nitish Kumar lambasted BJP and RSS?,” has gained traction on Facebook and X ahead of the 2025 Bihar assembly polls. Newschecker, however, found the video is being shared out of context.

A keyword search for “Nitish Kumar,” “BJP/RSS” and “freedom struggle” on Google did not yield any recent reports on the alleged statement by the Bihar Chief Minister.
We then conducted a reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral clip which directed us to a report by Live Hindustan, dated August 24, 2022, featuring Kumar’s after the Mahagathbandhan won the floor test in the Bihar assembly.
Accusing the BJP-led centre of being solely focused on “publicity,” Kumar can be heard speaking around 19 minutes, “…Now they (centre) are giving different names. How are they linked to Independence? In the 75th year (of Independence), they were saying ‘will do this, and will do that.’ Where were you during the Independence struggle? Who fought the battle for Independence? …”

The now viral footage of Kumar’s remarks can also be found at the 2:47:01 mark in the recording of the Bihar Assembly proceedings, which was live-streamed on the official YouTube channel of Bihar Vidhan Sabha TV on August 24, 2022.
An ANI report from August 2022 also carried Nitish’s viral statement on the BJP.
Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) walked out of the NDA to form a new government in Bihar under the Mahagathbandhan banner in 2022. The coalition government won the trust motion on August 24, 2022, with 160 votes in its favor, while the BJP members staged a walkout.
The Bihar CM, however, once again joined hands with the BJP-led NDA in 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Hence, we find that an old video of Nitish Kumar lambasting the BJP is being misleadingly shared as recent.
