Fact Check
A circular issued by the CBDT states that the deadline for filing the ITR has been extended to September 30, 2025.
The circular is fake. The Income Tax Department has clarified that no such extension has been made.
An alleged circular attributed to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) claiming an extension of the ITR filing deadline for the assessment year 2024–25 to September 30, 2025, is circulating on social media. Newschecker found that the viral “circular” is fabricated.
A search for “ITR deadline September 30” returned no credible news reports or official announcements. Neither the Income Tax Department’s website nor its verified social media handles published such a circular.
The Income Tax Department flagged the viral circular as fake on its official X handle, warning taxpayers not to fall for misinformation.
A closer look at the document revealed glaring errors:
The subject line reads “15st” instead of “15th.” The body mentions “14st September” as the current deadline, which is grammatically and factually incorrect.
A reverse image search showed that the viral circular was doctored from a legitimate CBDT press release dated May 27, 2025, which had extended the filing deadline from July 31 to September 15, 2025. Other than altered dates, the text was identical.
On September 15, 2025, CBDT extended the deadline only until September 16, 2025. No further extension has been announced by the time of publishing this article.
UPDATE ON 25/09/2025: Even as the Income Tax Department extended the income tax return filing due date by a day, it has processed over 4.5 crore ITRs, as of September 18, 2025. However, this is far from the 7.5 crore returns filed for AY26. (full dataset on Dataful here).
