Fact Check
In the past week, Newschecker debunked claims related to Rahul Gandhi and Tokyo Olympics, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Education, and Messi’s farewell. Multiple posts on social media falsely claimed that the Central government has decided to expand the Supreme Court with branches in Chennai, Mumbai, and Calcutta. In other viral news, Iraqi photographer Muhammad al-Azzawi’s teary picture from 2019 was attributed to Lionel Messi’s farewell earlier this week.
The viral screenshot claiming to be from Rahul Gandhi’s official Twitter handle asking PM Modi for an answer related to the Tokyo Olympics is morphed.
The Central government has not decided to expand the Supreme Court with three more branches in Chennai, Mumbai, and Calcutta. The viral message circulating on social media is false.
The Ministry of Education is not giving free laptops to families to support virtual learning amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The message circulating on Whatsapp with a clickable link is fake.
Viral images of a teary cameraman are being shared with a misleading context related to Messi’s farewell. The man in the image is Iraqi photographer Muhammad al-Azzawi who got emotional after Iraq lost to Qatar in an AFC Asia Cup match in 2019.
