Fact Check
Woman Arrested In Mysuru For Wearing Saffron Saree? Here’s The Truth Behind Viral claim
Claim
Woman arrested by Karnataka police for wearing saffron saree outside Chamundeswari temple in Mysuru, Karnataka.
Fact
The police detained the woman mistaking her to be one of the protesters taking part in the Chamundi Chalo protests organised by the BJP and other Hindu organisations in Mysuru.
A video of a woman, clad in saffron saree, purportedly being detained and pushed towards a police van by law enforcement agency officials is going viral on social media platforms. Users sharing the video claimed that the woman attracted police action over the choice of colours of her attire. The video was also shared on Newschecker’s WhatsApp tipline with the caption, “in Karnataka A respectable woman is waiting outside the Mata Chamunda Devi temple for her husband, who is about to return from the temple. Karnataka police arrive and start pushing her into a police van. The woman starts crying. Find out the crime of this simple, respectable woman- She was wearing a saffron saree.”

Verification
- The woman in the video was heard saying that she had come to pray at the Chamundi temple. Using this as a reference we conducted a keywords search which revealed that the incident took place during the Chamundi chalo protest march held by the BJP in Mysuru and that it was a case of mistaken identity. Here’s a Kannada Prabha article on the same.
- TV9 Kannada also published a video report on their YouTube channel on September 9, 2025, showing the interaction between the cops and the woman, in which she reveals that she had come to pray at the temple for her daughter’s success in a job interview.
- According to The Star of Mysore, the woman and her husband were let go immediately after senior police officers intervened upon realising the mistake, confirming that the incident was indeed a case of mistaken identity.
- We have tried to contact the Mysore Police regarding the incident. This report will be updated once we receive their response.
Conclusion
Thus our investigation finds that the social media claims that a woman was arrested in Mysuru for wearing saffron saree, is misleading. The woman was detained after she was mistaken for one of the Chamundi chalo protesters, and was immediately released by the police after realising the mistake.
